What cost tracking actually has to cover on a live project.
Cost that has happened but has not been posted
Labour, plant, materials and subcontract progress exist on site long before an invoice reaches the ledger. If the tracker only shows posted cost, it is always reporting the past.
Cost against the budget line it belongs to
A project total is not control. Cost has to sit against the specific budget line and cost classification it draws down, or the package position is wrong even when the total looks right.
What Finance has actually posted
The accounting actual is the authoritative figure. Tracking software has to show it alongside the project view rather than replacing it or quietly overwriting it.
What is still left to run
Cost to date only answers half the question. The remaining cost — and therefore the final cost — is what determines whether the margin survives.
Why the cost tracker stops being trusted.
Most teams start with a spreadsheet, and it works until the project moves faster than the person maintaining it. The position is only as current as the last manual update, and by the time it is rebuilt for the monthly review the work has moved on again.
The deeper problem is drift. Site-recorded cost and Finance actuals are compiled separately, and when they disagree the difference is usually closed with an adjustment rather than an explanation. The numbers agree; the reason is gone. Next month the same gap reappears and nobody can say whether it is a timing difference, a misallocation or something that should have been escalated.
Tracking cost is not the hard part. Keeping the reason behind every difference is.

What this is — and what it is not.
Cost tracking software is often sold as everything at once. It is more useful to be clear about the boundary, because that boundary is what keeps the position defensible.
- Foras is not a valuation, application-assessment, certification or payment system.
- It is not a final-account system, a payroll system or a timesheet system.
- Finance and ERP remain authoritative for posted actuals; Foras complements them.
- Where cost cannot yet be attributed, it stays visible as Unassigned rather than being forced somewhere.
